This famous Mahayana sutra was taught by Buddha Shakyamuni. In response to a question from bodhisattva mahasattva Akashagarbha, the Buddha explains how to prepare the mind for the moment of dying. It goes without saying that we cannot wait until it’s too late —when we are about to die—to prepare for death. Death can happen at any time, and the moment of death is considered a crucial opportunity for enlightenment. Therefore, we need to cultivate compassion and wisdom throughout our lives and prepare our mind for death.
This transformative sutra is one of Phakchok Rinpoche’s beloved texts. Concise and rich, the sutra provides clear instructions on how to cultivate the mind and delve into the essence of Buddha nature.
Rinpoche’s teaching on the sutra is highly accessible and applicable to our daily life situation as well as meditation practice. The sutra is not only a well-known Mahayana sutra but also important in the Mahamudra and Dzogchen traditions. At the end of the teaching, Rinpoche will answer questions related to preparing the mind for death.
