Sang Transmissions and Teachings

Sang is a profound Tibetan Buddhist practice of offering smoke to clear away obstacles and create favorable conditions. While the benefits of this practice are widely recognized, the deeper meanings of various sang texts and the proper methods for doing it as an individual practice at home are rarely taught in detail. In this teaching, Phakchok Rinpoche will give transmissions and teachings on two different sang practices: The Concise Smoke Offering from The Guru’s Heart Practice: Dispeller of All Obstacles (Tukdrup Barchey Kunsel) and Riwo Sangcho. Rinpoche will explain the principles and diverse benefits of these sang practices, including purification and generosity. Additionally, beyond simply offering smoke or incense, the sang practice holds immense power to enhance the accumulation of merit and wisdom. At the end of the session, Rinpoche will answer questions and clarify any confusions about sang practice.

Guru Padmasambhava himself extolled the benefits of sang practice as follows:

“When done regularly, and especially to create auspicious circumstances when starting any vital task of either spiritual or secular character, sang pacifies all damage, obscuration, and adversity; and effortlessly increases favorable conditions and goodness. Harvests will be good, livestock will multiply, and your descendants will flourish. Your Dharma lineage will last long and will be held in high esteem. You will magnetize everything excellent of this world and its inhabitants. Perfect auspiciousness, happiness, and excellence will manifest. Eventually, you will perfect the accumulation of merit and thereby supreme wisdom will arise without any effort. Therefore everyone should treasure these profound instructions.”
