This two-week course will be an introduction to the lengthier course to be offered on Samye Institute beginning Fall 2018. It is intended for practitioners who wish to feel a deeper connection with the texts they are chanting daily by gaining an understanding of the classical Tibetan language. In these two weeks of class, we will aim for all students to learn how to read and write and understand the basic structure of the language, using our practice texts as a basis for classes. Classes will be held two hours a day, in the mornings and evenings, and taught by Oriane Lavole.

Oriane Lavole studied Buddhist philosophy, classical and colloquial Tibetan, and translation practice at Rangjung Yeshe Institute (RYI) in Nepal. She has a Master’s in Translation, Textual Interpretation and Philology from RYI and has been teaching in the interpreter program there for two years. For the past year, she was the interpreter for the Bodhisattvacaryavattara class at RYI. Oriane has also frequently interpreted for Kyabgön Phakchok Rinpoche in the past three years, and is the head of the Lhasey Lotsawa Translation group (LLTP). In parallel, she does written translation both for LLTP and 84,000, and was the main translator for Rinpoche’s latest publication, The Great Tertön.

    Reflection of the Day

To have a healthy mind, we build the “muscles” of our mind through meditation training. But it is important to remember that in dignity training, the process takes place in our heart.
