Dr David Shlim: Valentine’s Day Compassion Celebration
February 14 @ 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm EST

We are very happy to invite you to our Valentine’s Day celebration with Dr. David Shlim next Tuesday, February 14th at 8 p.m. EST / 5 p.m. PST. You can find your local time here. This year, the holiday falls on the anniversary of the parinirvana of the great meditation master Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, Phakchok Rinpoche’s grandfather. As it is traditional to think of loved ones on this day, we at Samye Institute wish to spend some time together contemplating love and compassion under the guidance of a student of Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche.
Join us and celebrate with Dr Shlim by reflecting on compassion, the possibility of training in it, and which techniques we can draw from Buddhist philosophy to open our minds and allow our natural compassion to emerge. This talk will be held on Zoom and on the Samye Institute YouTube page.
Dr. David Shlim MD has been involved in several activities related to medicine and altruism, including the Medicine and Compassion Project, the Medicine and Compassion retreats, and Samye Institute’s Training in Compassion online course.

We may feel compassion can’t be trained because most of us have grown up in cultures that have no tradition of training in compassion. Most cultures encourage caring for the welfare of others but leave it up to the individual to muster the resources.
It doesn’t have to be that way. Luckily, there are well-established traditions in training in compassion, based on Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, and it’s possible to apply these teaching techniques in our own lives regardless of our cultural or spiritual background.
The Medicine and Compassion Project aims to share the Tibetan Buddhist tradition of training in compassion with the goal of allowing one’s own compassion to become more stable, vast, and effortless.
From November 6 to 12, 2023,with Phakchok Rinpoche and Lama Oser, Dr. David Shlim will lead the Medicine & Compassion Retreat in Nepal for anyone interested in cultivating compassion while simultaneously gaining greater peace of mind. The retreat is expected to fill quickly, so we encourage you to pre-register to avoid disappointment.
Dr. Shlim and Lama Oser will also bring Medicine and Compassion Retreats to Gomde UK and Gomde Austria-Germany this coming May. Gomde UK will host the retreat from May 11th to 14th, and Gomde A-G will host the retreat from June 1st to 4th.
