Dear friends near and far,

As always, I hope this message finds you well, healthy and happy. On this Guru Rinpoche day, I would like to share with you some pithy advice from my late root guru, Kyapchok Soktsé Rinpoche.

First of all, you should know that the two main qualities that practitioners need are faith and diligence. Here, faith refers to understanding the meaning and value of your practice instructions, as well as their key points. Based on this understanding, following these instructions and applying them in your practice is diligence.

Second, the main obstacles for practitioners are pride and jealousy. Please beware of these negative emotions.

Third, in order to support the practices that we undertake with faith and diligence, we need the right conditions. These supportive conditions are what we traditionally refer to as the accumulation of merit. This consists in practicing generosity by making offerings to the Three Jewels and giving to sentient beings; being disciplined and patient; reading Dharma texts, reciting mantra, performing circumambulations and prostrations—in brief, the seven-branch practice. All such practices constitute the accumulation of merit, or supportive conditions, which is like paving a good road. Your Dharma practice, and in particular your meditation, is like having a good car. If you don’t have a good road, you might have the most expensive and high-performance car, but your journey will still be bumpy. In order to make your journey as smooth and swift as possible, you therefore need a good road, which is paved through your accumulation of supportive conditions.

These are the key points of advice from my root guru Kyapchok Soktsé Rinpoche which I would like you to please take to heart today, and keep in mind.

With all my love and prayers,

Sarva Mangalam.

Phakchok Rinpoche
