Dear friends near and far,

As always I hope this message finds you well, healthy and happy. Today is the first Guru Rinpoche day of the water rabbit year, falling within Bumgyur Dawa, the first fifteen days of the lunar year which lead up to the Festival of Miracles (Chötrül Düchen). This period commemorates Buddha Śākyamuni’s amazing display of miracles during fifteen days to inspire faith in his disciples. During this time, the merit accrued by virtuous action is multiplied by ten million—so please take advantage of this precious opportunity to practice the Dharma and accumulate merit!

On this special day, I would like to share with you two quotes that teach us the key points of the practices of generation, completion, and Guru Yoga. These key points are also the marks of progress in our practice, which we should always look for to check if we are practicing correctly, in the most meaningful way.

First:

The root of delusion is our minds
Grasping onto outer objects as real.
Whatever you practice, generation or completion,
Is solely a means to counter your clinging belief
In the reality of deluded appearances.
If it does not counter your attachment, aversion,
Reification, and habitual tendencies,
Your meditation is as useless as a dormant marmot.

Second, the Vast Expanse of Space Tantra (Namkha Longyang Gyü) says:

When the realization of interdependence dawns in your mind,
Your loving-kindness and compassion become impartial,
And you come to perceive all phenomena as pure—
That is when the guru’s blessings have entered your heart.

Please keep these instructions in mind to make sure your practice always strikes the vital points, and do not forget to accumulate merit during this auspicious time.

With all my love and prayers,

Sarva Mangalam.

Phakchok Rinpoche
